You know you're a Life Path 4. Do you know where the number comes from?

What does Life Path 4 mean?

Life Path 4 is what a birth date adds up to when the month, day and year are each reduced to one digit, added and reduced again. About 8.1% of birthdays from 1950 to 2009 add up to 4. Numerology books tie it to order, steady work and practical sense.

What it is

A life path number is the single number a birth date boils down to in numerology. Take the month, the day and the year, shrink each one to a single digit by adding its digits together, add the three results, and shrink the total the same way. What is left, 1 to 9 or one of the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, is the life path. 1

4 is one of the nine single digits. Birthdays get to it from several totals, 13, 31, 4 and 40 among them; the most common route is a total of 13, which accounts for 77.4% of all Life Path 4 birthdays in the machine's count.

Numerology treats the life path as the main number in a chart, roughly what the sun sign is to astrology. It is one of several: there are numbers worked out from the letters of your full name, and a personal year number that moves on as the years go by. 1

The method is younger than its reputation. The birth-date sum is in print in L. Dow Balliett's The Philosophy of Numbers (1908), where she called the result the birth vibration and spoke of a person's 'birth path'. The Pythagoras usually attached to it is mostly later legend: he wrote nothing down. 2,3

4 in the old books

What numerology tradition, old and new, has attached to 4: the same for everyone whose birthday adds up to it.

Four is the oldest documented 'meaning' in this whole lane. Aristotle reports that the Pythagoreans made justice a property of number, and his translator's note, following the ancient commentator Alexander, says the number was 4, the first square: a number made of equal parts, two times two. 4

L. Dow Balliett gave every number a colour and a musical note, and found the colours by spelling their names in numbers. In The Philosophy of Numbers (1908) 4 is blue and green, and its note is F. 2

Cheiro (Count Louis Hamon) gave each digit a planet in his Book of Numbers (1926), and 4 is Uranus. Uranus was found in 1781, more than two thousand years after Pythagoras, so this pairing is a modern one. His birth number was the day of the month alone, so his 4s are the people born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd and 31st. 5,6

Modern numerology books and sites file 4 under order, steady work and practical sense. 1

That's the number on its own, the same for everyone whose birthday adds up to 4. A full numerology chart sets it beside the numbers from your name and your birth day, and they don't always pull the same way.

Where Life Path 4 comes from

Era by era, with sources. The whole story, every number together, is on the Life Path Numbers page

  1. Ancientc. 570–490 BCEPythagoras lives on Samos and later at Croton in southern Italy. He writes nothing, so everything said about him, including his supposed numerology, comes from other people, most of it centuries later. 3
  2. Classical4th century BCEAristotle describes the 'so-called Pythagoreans', who held that the principles of numbers were the principles of all things, and who tied justice, soul and opportunity to particular numbers. 4
  3. Classical4th century BCEAlexander of Aphrodisias, explaining Aristotle, gives the Pythagorean number for justice as 4, the first square. 4
  4. Late antiquec. 200 CEThe word gematria first appears in a list of rules for reading scripture. In Hebrew, letters double as numerals, so any word has a total, and gematria reads words through those totals. 7
  5. Late antique3rd–6th centuryThe Sefer Yetzirah, the Jewish book of creation, describes the world as made through 32 paths of wisdom: ten Sefirot and the 22 letters of the alphabet. Later Kabbalah builds on it. 8
  6. 1900s1908L. Dow Balliett of Atlantic City publishes The Philosophy of Numbers. Her worked example, a man born January 17, 1872, reduces the month, the day and the year and adds them: the same steps used today. She keeps 11 and 22 whole as master numbers. 2
  7. 1920s1926Cheiro, the pen name of Count Louis Hamon, publishes his Book of Numbers in London. He uses the day of the month alone as the birth number and gives each digit a planet. 5,9
  8. 1920s1926Cheiro pairs 4 with Uranus, a planet William Herschel had found in 1781. 5,6
  9. 1930s1930Ariel Yvon Taylor's Numerology Made Plain lists 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers, one more than Balliett. 9
  10. 1960s1965Juno Jordan, who began studying with Balliett as a teenager, publishes Numerology: The Romance in Your Name. Her California Institute of Numerical Research met weekly for 25 years. 9
  11. 1970s1979Numerology and the Divine Triangle, by Faith Javane and Dusty Bunker, comes out from Para Research: one of a wave of paperbacks that took the birth-date sum to bookshop shelves. 10
  12. 2010s2017Psychologist Jeremy Genovese tests birth numbers against every Nobel Prize winner from 1901 to 2010 and finds them spread no differently from chance. 11
  13. Today2020sNumerology lives on phones. By 2023 the #AngelNumbers hashtag on TikTok, a numerology offshoot, was reported to have hundreds of millions of views, and NBC’s TODAY publishes a guide to calculating your life path. 12,13

Worked out, step by step

Calculated facts only, worked out the same way the machine does it.

  • How it is worked out: reduce the month, the day and the year to one digit each (keeping 11, 22 and 33 whole), add the three, then reduce the total the same way.
  • Worked example, January 2, 1990: month 1 → 1; day 2 → 2; year 1+9+9+0 = 19 → 1. 1 + 2 + 1 = 4.
The path, worked outJanuary 2, 1990
  1. Month January 1 1 already one digit
  2. Day 2nd 2 2 already one digit
  3. Year all four digits 1990 1 + 9 + 9 + 0= 191 + 9= 101 + 0= 1 1
Add the three 1 + 2 + 1 = 4
Life Path 4 one digit already

How common it is

Counted by the machine over every birthday from 1950 to 2009. All twelve numbers, side by side.

  • 8.1% of all birthdays from 1950 to 2009 (1,765 of 21,915 days) add up to 4.
  • Four is a little rarer than most single digits because 22 takes the totals that would have become 4 by way of 22.
