How were dreams read as omens in the past?
Oneiromancy is the divination of dreams, reading them as messages or omens of future events. Across Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, China, and the Islamic world, specialists used dream manuals, omen lists, and temple incubation to decide what a dream foretold, and philosophers debated whether such dreams had any natural cause.

Manuals, specialists, and the dreamer
Manuals often gave different outcomes for the same symbol depending on who dreamed it. Arabic dreambooks sorted symbols for judges and merchants, and Chinese collections linked dreams to family roles and seasonal cycles.5
Ibn Sirin's manual classified dreams into true dreams from God, ego-based dreams, and Satanic dreams, and the name is attached to several compilations whose authorship is disputed.85
Philosophy and the causes of dreams
Avicenna's Canon of Medicine treated dreams as diagnostic tools indicating humoral mixtures. The Arabic adaptation Kitab al-Hiss wa-l-mahsus, linked to the circle of al-Kindi, explained veridical dreams as revelations sent by the universal intellect to the sleeper's imaginative faculties, and Averroes held that veridical dreams are caused by the active intellect.4
Albert the Great developed a theory of celestial influence on the faculties that made divinatory dreams possible, and later Latin scholastics drew on his treatise to get around Aristotle's disbelief in divinatory dreams.4
Thomas Aquinas distinguished dreams by their cause: some arise from waking thoughts or bodily state and can be read as signs, while seeking knowledge from demons is condemned.2
What the tradition holds
How practitioners describe it, in their terms. Described, not endorsed.
Ancient dream theory distinguished true, valuable dreams sent to warn the dreamer or foretell the future from vain or fraudulent dreams meant to mislead. Greek dream theory, as Gruppe reported it, divided dreams into those shaped only by the past or present and those that determined the future, including direct prophecies and symbolic dreams that needed interpretation.9
Chrysippus regarded the skilled interpretation of dreams as a true divination, though not infallible, and Synesius placed dreaming above all other methods of divining the future.10
Ibn Seerin, as the Arabic tradition recounts him, interpreted only about one of every forty dreams brought to him and often said he did not know the meaning of the rest. Ibn Seerin's Muntakhab Al-Kalam fi Tafsir Al-Ahlam is regarded by dream interpreters in the Muslim world as a major source.11
Freud described popular dream reading as replacing a dream's events with other events by a rigid key, or treating the whole dream as a symbol, and he named Artemidorus's work the finest example of dream interpretation left by the ancients.12
What the evidence shows
What historians, scientists and controlled tests have found.
Historians have described how dream interpretation changed in China. Hong Mai wrote that dream interpretation had become a lowly street art practised by a few who did not call themselves oneiromancers, and Zhang Fengyi lamented that people had lost interest in it after Song-Yuan times.7
Lab research on sleep has separated the question of when dreaming occurs from the question of what dreams mean for the future. Aserinsky and Kleitman described recurring periods of rapid eye movement in sleep in 1953, which opened the lab study of REM sleep and dreams.251314
Worked out from the evidence
Not stated outright by any one source. It is worked out from the sources cited.
- Reading dreams as omens rested on the idea that a dream could carry a message from gods, spirits, or fate, and the classic manuals taught readers how to decode it. Philosophers who explained dreams by natural causes kept the practice alive by sorting out which dreams could still count as signs.54
- The accounts of Artemidorus and Aristotle differ in how far a dream can foretell: Aristotle treated most apparently prophetic dreams as coincidence, while Artemidorus argued for a systematic method that a trained interpreter could apply.21516
Not yet confirmed
- How did dream manuals in different regions decide which of the many outcomes for a symbol applied to a particular dreamer?
- To what extent did temple incubation and court dream reading overlap in practice in the ancient Near East and Egypt?
