Rose quartz: meaning, properties and lore
Rose quartz is a pink, massive variety of the mineral quartz, chemically SiO₂. Its name comes from its colour, and it has a long record in ancient jewellery and talismans. Crystal practitioners associate it with love, gentleness and self-acceptance, and it is valued for these reasons today.

The mineral
Rose quartz is a variety of the mineral quartz, with the chemical composition SiO₂. It is a quartz variety and one of the many quartz varieties used as a gem material. It has a refractive index of 1.544 to 1.553 and a specific gravity of 2.65 to 2.75, and its Mohs hardness is 7. It has vitreous lustre and no discernible cleavage.125473
It is usually found in massive form, so well-shaped crystals are highly prized, and it is always found in massive form, lacking regular, flat crystal faces. It usually occurs as very imperfect, cracked material. Its lustre is greasy, and it is nearly opaque with semi-transparent edges.715
The colour of rose quartz ranges from very light pink, almost white, to medium-dark pink, and colour zoning can show rich purple-pink areas. Research shows that its pink colour comes from microscopic inclusions of aligned silicate mineral fibers. Advanced testing found those fibers are generally similar to, but not identical to, the mineral dumortierite. Deep pink shades are very popular but rare in small sizes.15410
Rose quartz is often cloudy or translucent because of internal fractures and tiny inclusions, and it is often hazy or turbid. When it contains small, well oriented inclusions, it can show asterism, and some cut stones display a six-rayed star. The finest quality material is highly transparent and usually faceted.215104
Rose quartz is typically found in pegmatites and also occurs in hydrothermal veins. Reported localities include Rabenstein near Zwiesel in Bavaria, the United States, Brazil, France, Ceylon, Finland, and Siberia. It is a widely distributed gem material. The finest transparent pink quartz examples come from Brazil, especially a deposit near Galiléia in Minas Gerais. Madagascar and Zambia are also linked to specimens studied by the Gemological Institute of America.5789
Some transparent pink quartz owes its colour to a different mechanism than the inclusions in massive rose quartz, and it is exceptionally rare compared to massive rose quartz. Material from some deposits fades in natural light, but its colour can be restored by irradiation. Rose quartz is generally stable when exposed to light and heat.53
History and lore
Rose quartz beads dating back to 7000 BC have been found in the area once known as Mesopotamia, and rose quartz jewelry was crafted by the Assyrians around 800-600 BC.11
The Romans used rose quartz as a seal to signify ownership. Ancient Roman, Egyptian, and Greek civilizations used quartz crystals as potent talismans. Early cultures of the Americas used quartz amulets, and people in the earliest recorded times believed in the magical powers of quartz.11
Egyptians believed the stone could prevent aging, according to the Gemological Institute of America. In the Middle Ages, medical practitioners used quartz in their healing potions. These are the historical beliefs recorded for the wider quartz family rather than for the pink variety alone.11
Quartz was known as the "love stone" and was said to balance the emotions and to heal anger and disappointment. This account gives the stone the older name of love stone, which later links with rose quartz in modern writing.11
Iridescent quartz, a variety of rock-crystal with rainbow-coloured cracks, is indexed as another name for rose quartz.7
Bismuthinite was previously identified in quartz from tintungsten deposits and from Alpine-type fissures, as recorded by Hyrsl and Niedermayr in 2003. Rose quartz is named for its delicate pink colour, which gives the variety its name.621014
Birthstone, zodiac and chakra links
Rose quartz has been recognized as the gem that commemorates the fifth wedding anniversary. Its link to the anniversary appears in the gemological record, and it is one of the stones that marks the fifth year of marriage.1
Rose quartz is not on the modern birthstone list, but is considered a traditional birthstone for October and an alternative birthstone for January, alongside Garnet, according to crystal practitioners.12
Practitioners link rose quartz with the zodiac signs Taurus and Libra and with Venus, the planet of love, beauty and harmony, though these links are modern. Crystal practitioners also connect the stone with the Heart Chakra, the fourth chakra, also called Anahata, another modern association.1312
In the Elizabethan era, a ring and bracelet acrostic setting spelt the word CHARITY, and rose quartz stood for the letter R. This setting dates to the 18th century and appears in the French and English jewellery of that time.14
What crystal practitioners say
Crystal practitioners associate rose quartz with love, and many people today link it with romance.151216
Crystal healers say rose quartz is believed to help release negative energy and emotions and to promote spiritual growth. Crystal practitioners say rose quartz can be worn or carried close to the body to help feel its calming effects. Practitioners associate the stone with a calm and tender mood for the wearer.12
Crystal practitioners say rose quartz furthers sensuality, romance and tenderness, and that it can help ease sexual difficulties by encouraging empathy and openness between partners, according to The Healing Crystals First Aid Book.17
Crystal healers describe rose quartz as radiating unconditional love and emotional healing through the Heart Chakra, a link that is modern. Believed to support the heart and circulatory system, the stone is, in the view of crystal healers, a means of promoting overall physical health. Believers also credit rose quartz with skin-nourishing properties, which is why it appears in facial rollers and gua sha tools.1312
Practitioners say rose quartz can be cleansed and charged by moonlight, selenite, running water, or smoke from burning sage. Practitioners also say rose quartz is traditionally considered safe for direct contact with water, so it can be used in stone elixirs. Crystal practitioners apply these methods to bring the stone back to its charged state.1216
According to The Healing Crystals First Aid Book, crystal practitioners rub a cold or prickling area with rose quartz balls, spheres or polished pieces. The same book lists forms in which the stone is sold, including clusters (rarely), raw and tumbled stones, bracelets, necklaces, pendants, cut spheres, gem essence and gem water.17
What testing has found
Ernst concluded in his analysis of 150 complementary and alternative treatments that there are no rigorous trials testing the therapeutic value of crystal healing. He states that a scientific proof of any positive effect of crystal healing beyond a placebo effect does not exist. Scientists remain skeptical of crystal therapy because rigorous research is lacking and few studies compare it to other therapies.1819
A 2001 study by British psychologist Christopher French had 80 volunteers distinguish real from fake crystals after holding them and meditating. Participants in the study could not tell real quartz crystals from fake glass ones, and they felt a warmth, tingling, or sense of well-being that they had been primed to expect. Researchers reported that the results have not been replicated in larger studies.181920
Crystal healing's pleasant feelings or seeming successes are attributed by Ernst to the strong placebo effect and to cognitive bias among believers. Some researchers say crystals likely do not directly act on physical and psychological problems but may have indirect benefits explained by the placebo effect.1819
Ted Kaptchuk, a Harvard Medical School professor, argued that placebo outcomes in unconventional medicine should not be discarded from analysis. Jarry says that alternative medicine's reputation benefits strongly from non-specific placebo effects, and that people who use crystals may feel better due to regression to the mean and self-limiting illness.1918
Questions about rose quartz
What do crystal healers say rose quartz is good for?
Crystal healers describe rose quartz as radiating unconditional love and emotional healing through the Heart Chakra, a modern link. They also hold that it is traditionally linked to love, gentleness and self-acceptance. Ernst, a researcher, found that controlled trials of crystal healing are lacking.131618
What uses do practitioners give rose quartz?
Believers hold that rose quartz regains its energy when left in moonlight or set on selenite, and some proponents consider it suitable for stone elixirs.1216
What powers do crystal healers credit to rose quartz?
Crystal healers credit rose quartz with helping release negative energy and emotions and with promoting spiritual growth. Believers say it has skin-nourishing properties and is used in facial rollers and gua sha tools. Crystal healers also believe it supports the heart and circulatory system and promotes overall physical health.12
Which zodiac sign is rose quartz linked to?
Crystal practitioners associate rose quartz with the zodiac signs Taurus and Libra. It is also linked with Venus, the planet of love, beauty and harmony. These zodiac and planetary links are modern practitioner associations and are not recorded in older texts.1312
Is rose quartz a birthstone?
Rose quartz is considered a traditional birthstone for October and an alternative birthstone for January, alongside Garnet, according to crystal practitioners. The modern birthstone list was created by the Jewelers of America in 1912.12
