What is the Midheaven in a birth chart?
The Midheaven, or MC, is the point of the zodiac highest in the sky, crossing the local meridian, at the moment you were born. Its name comes from the Latin medium caelum, middle of the sky. Astrologers read it as career, reputation and public life. It needs a birth time and birthplace.
The top of the chart
Draw a line from due north to due south through the point straight overhead: that is your meridian. The degree of the zodiac crossing it, on the side where the Sun stands at noon, is the Midheaven. It is due south for anyone in the northern hemisphere and due north in the southern. 1
The abbreviation MC comes from the Latin medium caelum, middle of the sky. Its opposite, the lowest point, is the IC, imum caelum. The MC isn't the zenith, the point directly overhead; it is where the zodiac crosses the meridian, which is usually lower. 1,2
Career, reputation and the tenth house
In most house systems the Midheaven is the cusp of the tenth house, the house of action, honour and standing in the world. Planets near it are the most visible in a chart, the way the Sun is most visible at noon. Modern astrologers read the MC's sign as a picture of vocation and public image.
In whole-sign houses the tenth house is simply the tenth sign from the rising sign, and the MC floats: it can fall in the ninth, tenth or eleventh sign, and astrologers who use the system read it as an extra point rather than a house boundary. 3
The IC, and why the MC is rarely 90° from the Ascendant
Opposite the MC lies the IC, imum caelum, the bottom of the sky: the point of the zodiac beneath your feet, on the far side of Earth. It starts the fourth house in quadrant systems, and astrologers read it as home, family and roots, the private counterweight to the public MC. 2
On a chart drawing the MC often looks as if it should sit a quarter-turn from the Ascendant. In fact the angle between them changes through the day and with latitude, because the zodiac is tilted against the equator. The farther from the equator you were born, the more lopsided the houses get, and inside the polar circles some degrees of the zodiac never rise at all, which is why astrologers argue over how to draw polar charts. 4
How the machine works it out
Calculated facts only, worked out the same way the machine does it.
- The machine finds the local sidereal time from your birth instant and longitude, then the ecliptic degree culminating on the meridian, allowing for the tilt of Earth's axis.
- It prints the MC beside the Ascendant in the placements table when the birthplace is known.
- Its houses are whole-sign, so the MC is shown as a point; the tenth house is the tenth sign from your rising sign.
Where the idea comes from
Era by era, with sources. More in the Reading Room.
- Classical1st century CEManilius counts the top of the sky among the four angles, the most powerful points of a chart. 2
- Classical2nd century CEVettius Valens uses the Midheaven and the Ascendant to divide the quadrants into houses. 5
- 1600s–1800s1650–1821Quadrant house systems that use the MC as the tenth cusp, above all Placidus, spread through printed tables. 6
Common misconceptions
“The Midheaven is the point straight overhead.” That is the zenith. The MC is where the zodiac crosses the meridian, which is often well below the zenith. 1
“The MC is always the start of the tenth house.” Only in quadrant house systems. In whole-sign houses it can sit in the ninth, tenth or eleventh house. 3
